On a dark December night in 2024, I found myself glued to the news, heart sinking with each update from the Jaipur-Ajmer National Highway in Bhankrota, Rajasthan. The scene was nothing short of apocalyptic. A tanker truck, carrying LPG, collided with another vehicle, sparking a chain reaction that turned the highway into an inferno.

Imagine, just for a moment, that you were there. Asleep in your vehicle, perhaps dreaming of your next destination, only to never wake up. This tragedy hits close to home for me; it could have been any of us on that road, living our ordinary lives until the extraordinary horror struck.
The fire was initiated by a collision between an LPG tanker and another truck, igniting a massive explosion.
Approximately 37 vehicles, ranging from trucks to motorcycles, were engulfed by the fire.
Fourteen people lost their lives, and 33 were injured, many with severe burns.
Stricter regulations on the transport of hazardous materials, better emergency response systems, and enhanced road safety measures could have potentially prevented or mitigated the disaster.
It’s a grim reminder that we need to overhaul our approach to road safety, particularly when it comes to transporting dangerous substances through populous areas.
In reflecting on this tragedy, I’m struck by how quickly life can change. It’s a call to action for all of us to push for changes that make our journeys safer. Let’s ensure that this night of horror leads to days of better safety on our roads.
